Former First Lady and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton certainly had no problem with our nation’s Electoral College election system when it helped her scandal-plagued husband Bill win the presidency in 1992 over incumbent George H.W. Bush and then get reelected in 1996 despite intense opposition.
However, since things did not end up the way she wanted them to in 2016, she has been pointing fingers everywhere, and just cast blame on the Electoral College system as well.
Despite winning the popular vote in controversial fashion, Hillary lost the Electoral College vote in a landslide. If the United States awarded the presidential election based on a straight popular vote system, instead of our system that gives individual states greater weight, Clinton would have won (so long as voter fraud was not proven).
Instead, Hillary wants to see it abolished, as she recently told host Anderson Cooper on CNN. Clinton claimed about the “godforsaken Electoral College” that she wanted it done away with a long time ago. Stated Hillary, “I said that in 2000.”
She continued, “If you look at our recent history, we’ve had several candidates, nominees, who’ve won the popular vote and lost the Electoral College. What does that say? It says that an anachronism that was designed for another time no longer works.” She added, “I think it needs to be eliminated, I’d like to see us move beyond it, yes.” Do you think Hillary would be saying this if she had won?
