During the memorial day for the fallen officers which took place at the U.S. Capitol, President Donald Trump and VP Mike Pence met the children of fallen Fresno officer, Sgt. Rod Lucas.
Sgt. Lucas’ children Gianna and Elijah were in DC for a ceremony on National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
According to reports, Lucas was one of 118 officers which lost their lives in the line of duty last year, and his name is now engraved in the granite wall of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
Lucas died an accidental death when he was shot by one of his colleagues on October 31, 2016, while they were shifting guns around, discussing different ways to carry a second gun, when a gun accidentally discharged and a bullet struck Lucas in the chest. It was later determined by investigators that no foul play was involved.
Lucas’ wife, now a widow, Jami, attended the memorial along with Gianna and Elijah, and she was escorted by Deputy Frankie Barba and Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims.
After the memorial, Sheriff Mims tweeted a thank you to President Trump for his act of kindness:

We are only grateful to finally have a President so devoted to his people. Let’s spread the word and show the Lucas family our respect and show President Trump our support now that he needs it the most!
