It has been only a few months since President Donald Trump took over the Office, but he is already showing American people that he knows how to do his job, and he’s doing it well. That is also the case of a fallen Marine, Sergeant Rafael Peralta.
Peralta has been nominated by California GOP Representative Duncan Hunter to receive the Medal of Honor posthumously. This case is different from many others because of the fact that Peralta was nominated three times for the Medal of Honor during Barack Obama’s presidency, but Obama’s secretaries of defense kept denying his nomination.
Now that former General James Mattis is the secretary of defense, the Sergeant may finally get what he should have gotten years ago. In 2004, Peralta pulled a grenade under his body in order to protect his Marines. Despite the fact that this sort of action has been ground for a Medal of Honor in the past, there have been some doubts in Peralta’s case.
Experts at the Pentagon shed doubt on this case by saying that Peralta could have moved the grenade underneath his body as he had been wounded in the back of the head by a bullet, leading to a question of whether he was even conscious when the grenade exploded, reports Conservative Tribune.
Hunter’s spokesman said that the benefit of Secretary Mattis is that he has commanded Marines in Iraq and he knows better than anyone how politics can be infused in a valor award case and how the bureaucracy, if left unchallenged, will win every time.
Reportedly, there were several eye witnesses, Marines who were probably saved by Peralta’s actions. They testified that the Sergeant did pull the grenade underneath his body. He has already received the Navy Cross and has had a ship named after him, but he also deserves to receive the Medal of Honor for his actions.
